TIMEOUT NY: 2004 Eat Out Awards select CHOCOLATE BAR as "Best Chocolate Store"
NEW YORK May 2, 2004--Time Out New York celebrated the restaurant community with their Eight Annual Time Out New York 2004 Eat Out Awards which took place on Monday, April 26th at the Tribeca Rooftop. Hosted by Saturday Night Live repertory player Rachel Dratch, Time Out New York readers selected Chocolate Bar as New York City’s “Best Chocolate Store”. Other category nominees included Jacques Torres, Martine’s, Neuhaus and Payard Patisserie. Of the award, Time Out New York editors remarked:
“Chocolate can be many things: a frilly-boxed token of love, a happy craving, a serious addiction. Rarely though, has the stuff been anything close to hip. Fancy, yes- Tiffany-worthy displays at uptown nominees Payard, Martine’s and Neuhaus prove that confectionery baubles can be gorgeous as any jewel. But to ply your beloved with chocolate that’s cool, you have to head to Chocolate Bar. Owned by Alison Nelson and Matt Lewis, the casual boutique sells killer brownies and chocolate-peanut-butter patties next to sleek offerings like Jacques Torres port-filled dark chocolates. Instead of the usual ornate wraps and bows, Chocolate Bar’s packaging is all retro-70’s squares and stripes in shag-carpet shades of orange, tan and brown. The selection is small but well edited, and mellow prices ($15 for 12 piece boxes) encourage impulsive and frequent buying- which is what you might expect at a store whose motto is “Eat more chocolate.”-Stephanie Rosenbaum
In a city of infinite dining options, the competition among restaurants has never been tougher. Once again, Time Out New York asked readers to put down their forks and pick winners in twenty-five hotly contested categories. This year, readers cast more votes than ever before to determine TONY’s Annual Eat Out Award winners. Notable guests included Daniel Boulud (Daniel), David Burke (davidburke & donatella), Wylie Dufresne (we-50), Stephen Hanson (Blue Water Grill), Keith McNally (Balthazar), Jehangir Mehta (Aix), Florent Morellet (Florent), Mauro Maccioni (Le Cirue 2000), Drew Nieporent (Nobu), Simon Oren (Marseille), Charlie Palmer (Kitchen 82), Audrey Saunders (Bemelman’s Bar), Tom Valenti (‘Cesca), Geoffrey Zakarian (Town) and hundreds more. Workhouse Publicity is now scheduling appointments with Chocolate Bar, co-owners Alison Nelson and Matt Lewis.
